United Airlines New SVP of Communications
Jim Olson was hired by United Airlines to be the new SVP of communications. Olson's main jobs will be media relations and other jobs in the corporate field. Olson's previous job for the last five years was the VP of global corporate communications at Starbucks. United Airlines began trying to find the best candidate for the job since former VP David Messing retired form the company in October, 2015. This is not Olson's first VP airline job, he also worked for US airways as the VP of corporate communications. Where in that position was head communicator when the plane landed on the Hudson in 2009. United Airlines has big expectations for Olson since he has had many other VP jobs around the same field.

This is funny because we just read and discussed about United Airlines' public relations disaster with Dave Carroll's broken guitar. The switch from communications at Starbucks to communications at United Airlines is a drastic change. However, since Olson already has experience as the VP of corporate communications at US airways prior to Starbucks, he should be comfortable working at United. It certainly is impressive that he was the head communicator when landing the plane in the Hudson River. A large publicly announced position such as this is common among CEO's such as Tim Cook, but it is refreshing to see one for the SVP of communications.
ReplyDeleteI think he will still need sometime to adjust going from Starbucks to United Airlines. He hasn't been with an airline in a few years and the industry is constantly changing. I believe after refreshing himself with the industry he will be able to perform a great job.
